Family and Friends pay fitting tribute to Brian Mason
February 28, 2010 in APA, charity, tournament

The Brian Mason Memorial Tournament was an overwhelming success, with 32 fellow APA league players and Brian’s family and friends coming together to remember Brian. In one of the largest league tournaments ever held at Diamond Eight, 16 teams played scotch doubles 9-Ball, with the all-female final match going to the hill. Audre Hartman and Bernadette Westbrook edged out Christine Skawinski and Jen Oliver to win 1st place. Dan Murray won the beautiful Cuetec cue donated by the APA of Albany while his brother Dave took home a Diamond Eight gift pack. Over $550 was raised for the American Diabetes Association. A plaque was installed at Diamond Eight to remember Brian. Frank Rogers shared some memories of Brian with the emotional crowd of players, family and friends, who all shared in a delicious hot and cold buffet. Thanks again to everyone who participated to help make this event so successful!
Audre Hartman and Bernadette Westbrook lost in the first round to Tracie and Scott, but played strong to get to the finals by beating Jeremy and Steven, who had been undefeated to that point. Christine Skawinski and Jen Oliver also found their way back to the winner’s side after a 2nd round loss to John and Brian. They defeated Brian and Julie to meet Audre and Bernadette in the finals. The final match was played very well, with neither team deserving a loss. In a 3-3 tie and the 7-8-9 left on the table, a safety battle ensued, with Audre and Bernadette coming out on top, after Audre made a tough cut shot on the 9-ball for the win. Brian Mason’s son Brian and his future son-in-law Eric played very strong, and finished tied for 5th place with Kathleen and Arun. If they ever join the league, watch out! The Mason Family was very appreciative of the support and love shown in memory of Brian, in an event that Brian “would’ve loved,” playing pool, and spending time with friends and family.
More photos from the event are posted on flickr.

Matt MacPhail
mmacphail@apaleagues.com
518-708-9567

You are all probably wondering how your League Operator faired against the winners. In 8-Ball, I barely escaped the exceptional shot making of young player Jason Welsh as the match went to the hill. I prevailed in the end but had no fingernails left...lol. So, the side pot for Sundays match was $105 and I found myself up against Joe Sinicropi who calmly ran 9 ball rack after 9 ball rack to win the side pot 65 to 45.

Thank you for all who attended, we will have a best of the best tournament this Summer for those players who finish top 12 in win percentage this Spring.
There are 2 replies, with the last one on 01/05/2010 at 11:09:54 PM by edski
Quote:
[8]
In the 8-ball finals, Home Team (Skawinski) lost the 1st 2 matches against Blue's Cues (Robinson) but was able to bounce back to win the next 2. Jay D'Haene and Julie Levenberg took the pressure in stride as they brought Home Team back from the brink. With Blue's Cues having to forfeit the last match, the trophies went to Home Team. Both teams qualify for the 8-ball LTC.
[9]
In 9-Ball, Blue's Cues did not let their loss in 8-ball affect their focus as they held on to edge out the Intimid8ers (Strock). Although the Intimid8ers seemed broken after a stunning 18-2 loss, they began to mount a comeback. Blue's Cues stayed strong and hung on for the victory and the LTC qualification.

edski

Everyone says they know how to keep score...."oh it's easy", they say! But in reality many teams are not keeping score correctly. I know you are out to have a good time and play pool and the last thing you want to think about is keeping score. However, keeping score can be fun too! How you say? Keeping score correctly will increase your teams chances of winning and help keep it fair for everyone else in the league. Fair is fun...right?

So, with that said, please take 15 minutes and watch the How to Keep Score video (below) and pass on what you learn to the rest of your team.

Matt MacPhail
mmacphail@apaleagues.com
518-708-9567
